Platform-ZERO: Zero Emissions Photovoltaic Panel Production

Image of photovoltaic panels

The Platform-ZERO project has made significant progress toward the goal of zero-emission production in the photovoltaic sector. 18 months after its launch, the project aims to reduce production costs and improve the quality of photovoltaic devices through the implementation of innovative monitoring technologies and artificial intelligence

Platform-ZERO is a project co-funded by the European Commission, aiming to enhance the photovoltaic sector by investing in third-generation technologies such as CIGS and perovskite. These new technologies promise higher efficiency, reduced costs, and additional functionalities compared to traditional silicon panels. The innovations of Platform-ZERO facilitate Europe’s transition to zero-emission energy generation and increase the competitiveness of the European photovoltaic industry.

In particular, advanced sensor stations have been designed and configured to enable real-time monitoring of photovoltaic panel production lines, improving real-time defect detection and enabling zero-defect production.

The modular integration of sensors offers flexibility and adaptability to monitor processes and ensure quality control across various industrial sectors.

In parallel, the AI architecture developed within the project allows for intelligent monitoring and optimized control of production data. Effective interfaces for communication and data control are also being designed, allowing for unprecedented integration and interaction.

These innovations have being tested at four pilot plants across Europe:

  • Spain: Lurederra smart coating line-flow powder production line, operates based on a combination of production processes
    1. Nanoparticle powder synthesis by flame spray pyrolysis
    2. Nano-dispersion preparation
    3. Manual or robot-assisted spraying on glass
  • Germany: Pilot system for high-efficiency CIGS photovoltaic cells and modules at ZSW.
  • Austria: Sunplugged operates roll-to-roll line for the production of flexible CIGS foil for customized PV
  • Poland: SAULE’s pilot production line of perovskite PV modules  is based on a sheet-to-sheet sequential multi-process, where a flexible substrate is moved from station to station.

R2M Italy and France are responsible for communication, dissemination, and exploitation activities.

During the Next Generation High Efficiency Photovoltaics (NEXTGEN) International School and Workshop, we had the opportunity to present the results achieved with this project.
